There are five important lessons I’ve learned about resilience, which I witnessed in myself and my clients from around the world over the last few years:
We’re not born with or without resilience - it’s not an innate trait or a resource that can be used up.
We don’t think much about resilience until we feel the lack of it, often using words like exhausted, burned-out or being in a downward spiral to describe how we’re feeling.
We all have the innate human capacity to build our resilience in the same way we might build a muscle or create new habits.
Our ability to be resilient is systemic - we build it holistically by taking care of our whole selves.
We don’t “bounce back” from difficult times, rather, if we’re well equipped, we emerge forward, forever changed and more resilient.
I used to think that being resilient meant being strong, however, I now understand it has little to do with strength and everything to do with being well equipped to dance with life, no matter what tune the band is playing.
“When we learn how to become resilient, we learn how to embrace the beautifully broad spectrum of the human experience” ~Jaeda Dewalt
